Mechanical Engineer

I spent three years as a hands-on mechanical engineer at 908 Devices working on complex, compact, and high-stakes instruments, primarily in the field of mass spectrometry and chemical detection. I played a central role in bringing new hardware from concept through pilot production, with a heavy focus on thermal management, environmental protection, and precision mechanical design. I routinely used tools like CAD, 3D printing, and sheet metal design to solve problems with tough constraints. I used practical, iterative engineering to create everything from automated microfluidic prototypes, to ruggedized handhelds, and customized packaging for getting hardware out into the field. Through this diverse role I wore many hats - I gained experience leading, completing a wide variety of tasks, and presenting my work to stake-holders and customers alike.

Lead Mechanical Engineer

MX908BeaconCAD
I was the lead mechanical engineer for MX908 Beacon, a remotely operated area monitoring device for detection of chemical threats. It was designed primarily for hazmat teams and first responders so it was necessary to ruggedize the product. I designed many unique parts for this product; the rugged interior containing electronics and payload; and everything from overall packaging to detailed labeling.

Custom Designs

Snoot vent
Some of my custom designs include the unique rubber sampling snoot and ventilation components (pictured left) which maintained IP54 compliance: ingress protection from wind-driven rain and minimal dust ingress.

I also designed everything from overall packaging to detailed labeling, and the rugged interior containing the electronics and mass spectrometer.

Pilot Build

Beacon Pilot 2
I directly coordinated with a contract manufacturer to take the product from prototype to full production run. I lead pilot builds and noted necessary improvements to ensure manufacturing success. Sometimes, this involved desinging custom tooling and discussing designs with machinists.

Maverick

I worked alongside engineers of different disciplines on many aspects of the Maverick product. Maverick is a raman spectroscopy device which enables customers to measure glucose and lactate in bioreactors. I had a hand in the entire system: the handheld portion, the top hub, and the bottom module. I was also responsible for designing the calibration stand, labels, internal cooling components, heat sinks, and component layout in the compact footprint.

Surfacing

Maverick Glove
I designed organic parts with surfacing techniques in SolidWorks, like the black rubber glove to the left, and the custom fan duct below.

Package Design

Rebel Label Placement
I created custom packaging for the entire 908 product family. Pictured here is a shipping case for delivery to trade shows, ensuring expensive, finished products were shipped safely.

Label Design

I used free photo editing software to accomplish labeling tasks efficiently. I worked with a sign maker to create vinyl stickers for the Rebel product, pictured below.
